5G and rising data demand to drive Indonesia's mobile market growth

Indonesia's mobile services market is forecast to grow from US$10.2 billion in 2025 to US$12.1 billion by 2030, driven by increasing demand for mobile data and the continued rollout of 5G services, according to new research from GlobalData.

The research firm expects the market to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4% over the period, with growth in mobile data revenues more than offsetting declines in traditional voice and messaging services.

GlobalData forecasts mobile data service revenue will increase at a CAGR of 4.8% between 2025 and 2030, supported by rising mobile internet adoption, greater uptake of higher-value 5G services and increasing demand for bandwidth-intensive applications such as video streaming and social media.

Average monthly mobile data consumption is expected to rise from 20GB in 2025 to 30.3GB by 2030 as operators continue expanding 5G networks and introduce more data-centric service plans.

"The average monthly data usage over mobile networks is forecast to increase from 20GB in 2025 to 30.3GB in 2030, in line with the surge in consumption of online video and social media content on mobile networks, on the back of 5G network expansions and promotional data-centric plans offered by MNOs," said Sarwat Zeeshan, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData.

While 4G remained Indonesia's dominant mobile technology in 2025, the report expects its share of subscriptions to decline steadily as consumers migrate to 5G. Growth will be supported by the wider availability of affordable 5G smartphones, expanded network coverage and premium data-focused service offerings.

The Indonesian government is aiming to extend 5G coverage to more than 30% of the country by the end of 2030, providing further momentum for adoption.

According to GlobalData, Telkomsel will maintain its position as Indonesia's largest mobile operator throughout the forecast period, supported by its extensive 4G coverage and continued investment in 5G infrastructure. The operator had achieved more than 97% population coverage with 4G by March 2026 and had deployed more than 2,500 5G base stations across 56 cities by mid-2025, while continuing to expand its Hyper 5G network and AI-powered autonomous network capabilities.

Despite the positive outlook for data services, the report predicts mobile voice revenue will continue to decline as consumers increasingly use over-the-top (OTT) communications platforms and operators bundle voice minutes into mobile plans.
