Dolphin Telecoms launches cross-border MVNO

Mobile service Dolphin Telecoms South Africa says it has officially launched its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), delivering affordable mobile connectivity designed for people who live, work, study, or regularly travel in South Africa while maintaining strong ties with their home countries.

Following a successful soft launch, full commercial operations start next week – on 5 August – on operator Cell C’s network.

Dolphin Technologies Group says the launch marks the first step in strategy to build an integrated telecommunications and digital payments ecosystem across Africa.

Dolphin combines local mobile connectivity with digital financial services. Through Dolphin Pay, it says, customers will progressively be able to receive money, fund digital wallets, purchase airtime and data, make digital payments, and access additional financial services as new capabilities are introduced.

For Africans building their lives in South Africa, Dolphin says it offers more than a travel eSIM. Subscribers receive a real South African mobile number with local voice, SMS, and data at local rates – allowing students, professionals, and cross-border traders to keep the same number wherever life takes them.

Beyond mobile services, Dolphin Technologies Group is expanding its regional financial ecosystem through digital wallets, remittance services, payment infrastructure, regional settlement capabilities, and future wallet-linked payment cards.

While a glance at Dolphin’s website seems to indicate a focus on South Africa and Zimbabwe, the South African launch is described as the beginning of the Group’s regional expansion, with the introduction of additional MVNO partnerships, banking partnerships, payment providers and cross-border payment corridors planned across Africa.
