Ericsson and du trial 5G FWA with extended-range mmWave

UAE telco du announced on Sunday it has successfully completed a proof of concept (PoC) with Ericsson using millimeter-wave extended range technology to provide 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in residential areas across the UAE.

For the trial, du deployed Ericsson's AIR 5343 mmWave radio solution, along with advanced software features, to deliver high-capacity, high-performance FWA services using a 5G Standalone (SA) macro deployment architecture.

Du said the PoC achieved gigabit speeds across coverage areas, extended capacity for high-demand applications, boosted coverage in residential neighbourhoods, and enabled faster rollout of FWA services.

Du CEO Fahad Al Hassawi said the trial demonstrates the viability of mmWave technology for residential broadband applications in the UAE, as well as the telco’s ability to extend its FWA service to more residential households.

"This proof of concept helps us explore how advanced 5G technologies can improve service delivery, create new customer offerings, and strengthen our role in shaping the UAE's digital infrastructure,” he said in a statement.
