Cellnex Poland works with Ericsson on RAN update

Cellnex Poland, a major telecommunications infrastructure operator managing towers, masts, and active network equipment across Poland, has selected tech giant Ericsson as one of the suppliers for the network modernisation and expansion of its radio access network (RAN).

Ericson says the scope of the deal includes radios, RAN compute modules, microwave links, antennas and enclosures.

There’s also an energy-efficiency component to this deal. Equipped with the Ericsson Silicon range of system on a chip, the selected equipment is designed to support improved energy performance, a lower physical footprint and reduced tower load compared with earlier generations.

In line with the Cellnex Group's sustainability commitments, Cellnex Poland’s infrastructure enables Plus, the brand name of Poland's mobile phone network operator Polkomtel, to deliver connectivity services to end customers.

These innovations, says Ericson, will expand coverage, increase speeds, and enhance reliability, while reducing site footprint and energy consumption.

Explaining the thinking behind the deal, Leszek Lis, Director for Operations and Member of the Management Board of Cellnex Poland, says: "The growing demand for mobile data transfer requires not only the modernisation of active equipment. It also needs an increase in quantity to densify the service while, at the same time, improving energy efficiency, equipment optimisation, network resiliency and environmental effects. Ericsson's devices and technology will allow us to achieve these goals. By introducing the latest generation of equipment, we are modernising the network that will enable Plus to offer even more advanced, reliable and secure services in the era of 5G and other coming technologies."

With this agreement, Cellnex becomes Ericsson’s lead customer to deploy the high-power microwave E-band radio MINI-LINK 6356, delivering high-capacity backhaul with improved power efficiency.

In another first, Cellnex is carrying out the first large-scale deployment of Ericsson's Transport Automation Controller for the microwave backhaul, bringing AI-driven automation and smarter network management. Also, with this agreement the AIR 3229 dual-band TDD Massive MIMO radio is to make its Polish debut, combining C band and 2600 TDD in a single unit to reduce tower footprint and accelerate 5G rollout.

In addition, Cellnex has selected Ericsson Energy & Enclosure platform, a fully integrated site-energy solution that combines high-efficiency power systems, intelligent energy storage, and advanced enclosures to deliver more resilient, secure, and sustainable networks.
