ION Network deploys Ciena gear for ICS1 connecting Indonesia and Singapore

ION Network deploys Ciena gear for ICS1 connecting Indonesia and Singapore

Ciena announced on Thursday that Indonesia’s ION Network (a.k.a. Parsaoran Global Datatrans) is deploying its WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) on its new ION Cable System 1 (ICS1) that will connect Jakarta with Singapore.

The 2,000-km ICS1 system will run on Ciena’s 6500 platform powered by WL6e coherent optics to deliver wavelength services up to 1.2 Tbps and up to 24 Tb/s of end-to-end capacity. That will increase the cable system’s total capacity to 288 Tbps across six cable segments using two fiber pairs.

ICS1 will also leverage Ciena’s Layer 0 (L0) control plane capabilities to ensure high service availability and operational efficiency, Ciena said.

ION Network CTO Daniel Simanjuntak said the ICS1 system will boost network reliability for more than 250,000 homes across Bali, Java, and Sumatra.

“With a new transmission network in place, we will be better prepared to develop our fiber-to-the home network and expand our connectivity support to more islands in Indonesia,” he said in a statement.

Alex Wong, regional MD for ASEAN at Ciena, added that its optical technology will make Network “well-positioned to address the projected bandwidth demand driven by artificial intelligence and cloud applications.”

ION Network has also deployed Ciena gear in its B3JS (Jakarta-Bangka-Bintan-Batam-Singapore) and BDMCS (Batam-Dumai-Medan) cable systems.

ICS1 will be deployed along subsea and protected Sumatra terrestrial routes. The network is scheduled to go live at the end of this year.

ICS1 is one of a number of recent subsea cable projects that aim to boost Indonesia’s international bandwidth via a direct connection to Singapore.

MoraRepublic and Chinese subsea cable firm HMN Tech are deploying the Moratelindo International Cable System-3 (MIC-3), which will connect Singapore and Batam.

Telkom Indonesia’s international arm Telin is developing the Nongsa-Changi subsea cable in partnership with BW Digital, as well as the Indonesia Singapore Cable System (INSICA) in partnership with Singtel.

Super Sistem is building its Super Sistem Batam–Singapore (SSBS) subsea system as part of a broader project, the Barat Timur Indonesia (BTI) Cable System, being deployed by Super Sistem and APTelecom that will link Batam, Jakarta and Manado via seven landing stations. The SSBS will be directly connected to NeutraDC’s data centre in Singapore and its Tier III data centre in Batam built by NeutraDC and Singtel-owned Nxera.
