Nuclear power deal for Latin American data centres

Terra Innovatum Global, a developer of micro-modular nuclear reactors, has announced that Latin American media group Waiken ILW has chosen its SOLO micro-modular reactor platform for an initial deployment supporting the data centre infrastructure of two broadcasting and streaming services providers.

The non-binding letter of intent covers up to 8MWe of behind-the-meter capacity, delivered via multiple SOLO units for data centre sites that support satellite television, streaming and broadband provider DIRECTV Latin America and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite pay television operator SKY Brazil.

Terra Innovatum says its SOLO reactor is a 1MWe and 4MWth microreactor that can scale up to 1GW or more of CO2-free power with a minimal footprint, making it an ideal solution for rapidly replacing fossil fuel-based thermal plants.

The agreement represents Terra Innovatum’s first announced commercial deployment initiative in Latin America and, the company says, reflects growing international demand for standardised, factory-built micro-modular nuclear power.

Terra Innovatum says it plans to leverage cutting-edge nuclear technology through the SOLO Micro-Modular Reactor (SMR) to provide efficient, safe, and environmentally conscious energy.

Conceptualised in 2018 and engineered over six years by experts in nuclear safety, licensing, innovation and R&D, SOLO addresses pressing global energy demands with a market-ready solution. Built from readily available commercial off-the-shelf components, the proven licensing path for SOLO enables rapid deployment and minimises supply chain risks, ensuring final cost predictability.

It is anticipated that SOLO will be available globally within the next three years.

According to the Data Centre Dynamic website, a number of microreactor firms have signed deals with data centre operators over recent years, notably in the US.
