Ascenty signs major renewables deal to power LatAm data centres

Casa dos Ventos, one of Brazil's largest renewable energy developers, has signed a long-term power supply agreement to provide renewable electricity to Ascenty, one of Latin America’s largest data centre operators.

Under the agreement, valued at more than US$500 million, Casa dos Ventos will supply clean energy generated from two new projects, a large wind complex and a solar facility, that together are expected to exceed 1.5 gigawatts of installed capacity once fully developed. Electricity delivery to Ascenty’s data centre portfolio will start in 2027, supplying an estimated 110 average megawatts of power annually.

The wind project is located in the northeastern state of Piaui and is planned to deliver approximately 828 megawatts of capacity. The solar project will be developed in Mato Grosso do Sul and is expected to add around 640 megawatts. Combined investment across both projects is estimated at roughly US$7.5 billion.

Ascenty will take an ownership stake in the renewable projects, aligning its long-term energy needs with generation assets and reducing exposure to future power price volatility.

The Data Centre Dynamics website says that, according to the companies, the contract will increase operational flexibility and provide more robust energy planning for Ascenty over the contract's term. The agreement is expected to enable Ascenty to avoid approximately five million tons of CO2 emissions over the coming years.

It adds that Ascenty, currently owned through a joint venture that was set up by Brookfield and Digital Realty, has 36 facilities, with 24 in operation and 12 under construction or development across Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Colombia.
