Chunghwa Telecom expands into Latin America with Guatemala base

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has established a subsidiary in Guatemala as it expands its enterprise ICT business from North America into Latin America and the Caribbean.

Chunghwa Telecom Global, Guatemala was established in Guatemala City on October 1, with the operator positioning the country as a regional base for providing ICT and cybersecurity services to governments and businesses across Central and South America.

The subsidiary is an extension of Chunghwa Telecom Global, which has operated in the US for more than 20 years and provides connectivity, data centre, mobility, 5G private network and systems integration services.

Chunghwa Telecom said Guatemala's position as a gateway between North and Latin America, combined with growing investment in digital transformation, made it a strategic location for the expansion.

The operator will target Taiwanese businesses expanding into Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as local government and enterprise customers. It also plans to support digital infrastructure projects in Guatemala.

Separately, Taiwan and Guatemala signed an agreement to support a resilient backup data centre project for Guatemala's Ministry of Public Finance. The agreement was signed by Taiwan's ambassador to Guatemala Vivia Chang and Chunghwa Telecom International Business Branch vice president Pai Ming-cheng.

Chunghwa Telecom chairman Alex Chien said the Guatemala operation would allow the company to provide integrated ICT and cybersecurity services to governments and enterprises across the region.

The operator said the expansion would also support Taiwan's cooperation with Guatemala and other diplomatic allies, while helping Taiwanese businesses pursue opportunities in Latin American markets.
