Vodacom Tanzania has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC) to accelerate the digital transformation of cooperative societies through its M-Kulima platform, according to Daily News.
The partnership aims to improve efficiency, transparency and financial inclusion across Tanzania’s cooperative sector by digitising key processes and expanding access to digital and financial services for farmers and cooperative members.
M-Kulima is Vodacom Tanzania’s digital agriculture platform, designed to help cooperatives and farmers digitise activities such as farmer registration, produce collection and payments. The platform also provides access to financial services including loans, savings, insurance and investment products.
According to Vodacom, M-Kulima has registered more than 3.2 million farmers and facilitated over TZS88 billion (US$34 million) in payments to more than 325,000 farmers. As part of the agreement, Vodacom Tanzania also donated 35 laptops to TCDC to support its digital operations.
Nguvu Kamando, director of Vodacom Business, said the initiative reflects the operator’s commitment to using technology to improve livelihoods and support Tanzania’s socio-economic development. He said the partnership would equip cooperatives with digital tools and financial solutions to improve operational efficiency and transparency while helping farmers participate more effectively in agricultural value chains.
Under the agreement, cooperative societies will gain access to digital member registration, payment services, savings and loan products, and other digital tools. The partners also plan to deliver training and awareness programmes to strengthen digital skills among cooperative leaders and members.
Dr Benson Ndiege, registrar of cooperative societies and chief executive of TCDC, said the partnership would help modernise cooperative operations and improve service delivery. He added that greater adoption of digital solutions would strengthen accountability and create more value for members, particularly farmers.
The collaboration forms part of broader efforts to promote digital and financial inclusion and increase technology adoption across Tanzania’s cooperative sector.
