PLDT’s Smart Communications aims to expand eSIM adoption in the Philippines with the launch of a “pluggable eSIM adapter” for Android users whose phones don’t support eSIM.
The “adapter”, launched on Wednesday, is a physical multi-SIM card paired with a companion mobile app that enables users to download and install up to five eSIM profiles.
The app enables users to manage and switch between their eSIM profiles for personal, business or travel use.
The multi-SIM card also comes bundled with a mobile number, 5GB of open access data, 100 SMS, and 10 minutes of calls valid for three days.
Smart said the eSIM adapter enables users with non-eSIM-capable Android devices use eSIMs without having to purchase a new handset.
Smart first launched its prepaid eSIM service in July 2023. Last year it upgraded the service to allow prepaid customers to keep their old number if they switched to eSIM.
Rival telcos Globe Telecom and DITO Telecommunity also offer postpaid and prepaid eSIMs for users with compatible handsets. Smart claims it’s the first telco in Asia-Pacific to launch an eSIM adapter for non-compatible Android handsets.
In June, Globe began trialling the GSMA’s new SGP.32 eSIM standard designed for enterprise-level IoT deployments such as connected vehicles, utility meters, and industrial equipment.
