Cuban state operator ETECSA (Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba) has revealed new 4G mobile tariffs amid strong uptake of its fixed broadband offering.

The island nation has long lagged behind the rest of the world in terms of connectivity, but saw fixed broadband debut in March 2017 and commercial 3G launch in December last year. ETECSA launched an LTE network in the first half of 2019 using the 1800MHz band. 500 LTE base stations are expected to be operational by the end of 2019.

While the service was initially only available to selected users, in October it was made accessible to pre-paid customers in the majority of Cuba’s provinces (Artemisa, Camaguey, Ciego de Avila, Granma, Guantanamo, Havana, Holguin, Las Tunas, Matanzas, Mayabeque and Santiago de Cuba). Cienfuegos will join these provinces following a 4G upgrade next year.

ETECSA reported over 124,000 users of its ADSL residential broadband offering, which is available in Cuba’s 168 municipalities.
