Smartphone shipments in Indonesia declined for the eighth quarter in a row but analyst company IDC forecast a better H2 for the market as shipments will stabilise.

IDC found in its research 8.9 million units were shipped in Q2 down 6.3% from 9.5 million in the same quarter last year.

IDC associate market analyst Vanessa Aurelia said: “IDC expects the market has bottomed out and we should see consumer demand and the supply across different price bands to stabilize as vendors prepare to increase their sales in the year-end holiday period, although full year 2023 smartphone shipment will be lowest since 2018.”

Growth in the entry-level price point aided in narrowing the decline in the quarter to a single digit, as most key vendors increased shipments in this segment. Meanwhile, 4G smartphones grew in demand as they occupied 86% of the market, growing from 82% in Q1. As for 5G smartphones, they declined by 4.3% year-on-year for the first time since appearing in Indonesia in 2020.

Samsung was the largest shipping vendor with 1.9 million units but this is stagnant. Oppo came second with 1.6 million units declining from 2 million a year ago. Vivo took a podium finish with 1.5 million units (down from 1.7 million), Xiaomi followed with 1.3 million (down from 1.5 million). Transsion saw slight growth with 1.2 million units up from 1.1 million.
