Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon providing on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs, is opening a new data centre design facility in Zagreb, Croatia.

The new facility will support the development and operation of AWS Cloud services, with a focus on data center design, product development, and research.

The company said it will hire ‘local talent’ including electrical and mechanical engineers, civil and structural engineers, IT experts, and solutions architects.

In February 2021, AWS launched an AWS edge location in Zagreb, which is now providing users with an “up to 14% reduction in first-byte latency”, said the firm.

AWS and the government of Croatia have now signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to help accelerate the adoption of cloud computing in the public sector and contribute to Croatia’s National Development Strategy.

The MoU says the partners will collaborate on developing a cloud-ready workforce, supporting the development of cloud-enabled businesses and the government’s IT modernisation efforts, and supporting the development of the country's cloud policies.

Prime minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković said: “The development of our nation’s digital economy is a priority for this government and cloud computing is going to play an important role. The MoU we signed sets out several ways in which the government will now work with AWS in the areas of innovation and economic development to support a cloud-ready workforce.”
