Ooredoo Group’s international connectivity arm OFN said on Wednesday it has signed an agreement with Iraqi fibre infrastructure provider iQ Networks to create a terrestrial corridor across Iraq linking OFN’s Fibre In Gulf (FIG) subsea cable to Turkey and Europe.

Under the agreement, OFN will purchase multiple dark fibre pairs from iQ for transit connectivity across Iraq. Those pairs will be linked to the FIG cable’s landing point in Iraq, enabling the route to extend overland across Iraq towards Turkey.

The FIG cable – which Ooredoo [first revealed in January 2025](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/optical-fixed-networks/17930-ooredoo-and-asn-to-build-subsea-cable-for-gcc-counties-and-iraq.html) – aims to connect all six countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) as well as Iraq with 720 Tbps of capacity across 24 fibre pairs to meet sustained demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers, AI platforms and data centre operators.

Ooredoo signed a FIG landing agreement with [Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company (ITPC)](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/optical-fixed-networks/18180-ooredoo-and-iptc-sign-deal-to-land-fig-subsea-cable-in-iraq.html) in March 2025.

Combined with that agreement, the project with iQ Networks will create an additional geographical route for international data traffic, strengthen route diversity and enable customers to scale their transmission capacity according to their requirements, said OFN CEO Khalid Hassan Al-Hammadi.

“By bringing together FIG’s subsea capacity and iQ Networks’ terrestrial infrastructure, we are advancing a more integrated and resilient connectivity proposition for international customers,” he said in a statement.

iQ Group CEO Asoz Rashid added that the initiative will also support Iraq’s ambition to become a strategic regional hub for international data transit and capture greater value from the traffic crossing its territory.

“The sheer scale of this collaboration with OFN reinforces Iraq’s position as a key gateway for international connectivity,” he said. “By combining Iraq’s strategic location and iQ’s leading terrestrial infrastructure with the scale of the FIG subsea system, we have an opportunity to establish the primary route linking Asia, the Gulf and Europe.”

Both companies noted that the plan remains subject to regulatory and governmental approvals, as well as any other required approvals.
