Airtel Kenya has announced a partnership with the National Bank of Kenya to roll out the bank’s mobile banking service via the Airtel Money service.

Airtel announced a similar tie up with rival bank KCB (Kenya Commercial Bank Group) only 4 months ago, in September 2015, [as already reported on Developing Telecoms](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/financial-services/6003-airtel-kcb-sign-mobile-money-partnership-in-kenya.html). The latest move is a further demostration of the operator's rapid expansion in the field of MFS services.

As with the KCB tie up, the latest partnership will allow Airtel customers to access their National Bank accounts via mobile, and will enable customers to view and manage their accounts, make bill payments, and to transfer money between their bank account and Airtel Money account.

The two firms said the announcement forms part of a long-term relationship under which they will share their agents. National Bank agents will offer Airtel Money services, and Airtel agents are to offer National Bank services. This will also be extended to the bank’s branches, such that Airtel Money agents and customers will be able to access Airtel Money services via National Bank branches.

The partners said the move is intended to help address financial inclusion in Kenya.

“Getting access to financial services via the mobile phone can make a massive difference to people’s lives. We, at Airtel Kenya, are very excited about the service and the partnership with National Bank. This service gives customers the freedom to manage their bank account from their phone thus providing that much needed convenience and simplify the banking process,” said Airtel Kenya CEO, Adil El Youssefi.

“As technology and financial services continue to merge we have no doubt that this partnership will be a great step towards improving the lives of our customers.”

The service will be free for the first three months of the partnership, whereafter “minimal” charges will apply.
