Indian operator launches VoLTE services

Indian operator launches VoLTE services

Taking dead aim at rival Reliance Jio Bharti Airtel is launching LTE (VoLTE) services in Kolkata.

This means Airtel 4G users in Kolkata can look forward to a superior calling experience in terms of quality and faster connections.

In a statement Bharti said, “Airtel VoLTE, which works over 4G, will enable customers across the city to enjoy HD quality voice calls with a faster call set up time,” “We are delighted to extend our VoLTE footprint to Kolkata with the launch of our services today. Complementing our world class 4G network, VoLTE will add to the customer experience and our range of smartphone offerings,” Sameer Anjaria, CEO, West Bengal & Odisha, Bharti Airtel said.

VoLTE allows an operator to offer both voice and data without switching between bands, with voice being just another application that rides on an LTE data network. Incumbents currently offers calling on the legacy circuit-switch technology. Airtel said there would be “no additional data charges for VoLTE and calls would be billed as per existing plan or packs benefits”.

Bharti Airtel’s wide 4G network coverage enables seamless connectivity on Airtel VoLTE and in case of non-availability of 4G network, Airtel VoLTE calls will automatically fall back on the 3G/2G network to ensure customers continue to stay connected at all times.

Over 100 4G smartphone models are now compatible with Airtel VoLTE, which will allow customers to experience HD calling with faster call set up time. With top-end devices available from Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, customers can now choose from the best of flagship 4G smartphones including the iPhone X, iPhone 8 series, Samsung S7 & S7 Edge, OnePlus 5 & 5T to enjoy Airtel VoLTE services, the company added.

Bharti Airtel has already launched VoLTE services in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and is slated to go national by end-March 2018.
