ZTE will build telecom lab in Colombia with Javeriana University

ZTE has announced its partnership with Javeriana University of Colombia to build a telecommunications laboratory. ZTE has invested US$4 million for the construction of this laboratory, which will provide training for students from the Electronics Department of Javeriana University and ultimately for ZTE’s customers around Latin America, promoting the brand and its products, mainly focused on the wire-line infrastructure products, eg, NGN, Transmission (including SDH, DWDM, micro-wave) and net access (MSAG, DSLAM).

The laboratory, which will initiate activities at the beginning of 2010, will enable ZTE and Javeriana University to offer access to state-of-the-art telecommunication equipment and training courses for approximately 500 customers per year.

For Javeriana University the partnership will consolidates its policy of cooperation with high-tech industrial partners and will provide a hands-on scenario for students and faculty that will enable the development of international telecom research, while also promoting student mobility from well-recognised Chinese universities.

“With our new lab we are demonstrating our heritage and core understanding of Latin America carriers and their technology requirements,” said Su Jian, ZTE Columbia President. “We will have a continuous investment plan and look forward to training more telecom talent locally and to helping carriers deepen their understanding of the company.”

This partnership, with one of the oldest and most-recognised  universities in Colombia, shows ZTE’s “commitment and continuous investment to train more telecommunication talent” within Colombia’s local society. The centre, along with the other regional training facility built in Brazil, is intended to provide training services to a wider range of customers in Latin America. In the future and after the telecoms laboratory is well-positioned within the Colombian education sector, ZTE looks forward to implementing a trainee IT school.

ZTE delivers custom-made products and services to over 500 operators in more than 140 countries, committing around 10% of its annual turnover to R&D. ZTE has about 30% share of China’s total 3G equipment market in 2008. It is a member of the UN Global Compact that strictly adheres to the Ten Principles of the Global Compact in developing and carrying out programmes.

Javeriana University is one of the oldest, most traditional and most renowned universities in Colombia and Latin America. It is a private university founded in 1623, and was the first university in Colombia to be awarded Institutional Accreditation by the Colombian Ministry of Education. The University has 18 schools comprising 218 academic programmes, which provide an interdisciplinary, curricular-centered learning environment for students, faculty and researchers. Javeriana University is one of the 28 universities entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America (AUSJAL), and one of the 114 worldwide. Its alumni play an important role in the country’s progress, and include a vast range of prominent individuals in the country and region’s history, including former national presidents, politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, and journalists.
