Upstart Altobridge acquires ADC’s GSM base station & switching portfolio

Altobridge, a provider of solutions for mobile network operators with a particular focus on emerging markets, has acquired ADC’s portfolio of GSM base station and switching products.

Founded as recently as 2002, and headquartered in Kerry, Ireland, Altobridge has carved a niche in the provision of wireless services to communities in the most hard-to-reach areas of the globe. Focussing on the use of legacy satellite technology for backhaul the company has expanded rapidly and was recently named one of Ireland's 25 best managed companies.

Minneapolis based ADC, on the other hand, traces its heritage back to 1935, has been a major player in telecoms since the 1980, acquiring Krone, a leading supplier of copper and fibre-optic cable in 2004.

Altobridge is acquiring ADC’s existing GSM base station and switching product customer base including assets and intellectual property (IP) related to the product portfolio. The ADC GSM base station and switching product portfolio supports applications such as remote wireless and small national networks, as well as government, emergency and private network communications.

Altobridge believes the acquisition will enable it to build on the strong positions established by both companies in the remote network market. The ADC portfolio complements Altobridge innovations such as its Fully Managed Service business and solutions for optimising voice and data transmission for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

"Mobile Network Operators face a major challenge to deliver accelerating voice and data traffic for declining returns. Altobridge will continue to innovate and deliver further solutions that drive down these underlying communication costs,” said Mike Fitzgerald, CEO of Altobridge. "This acquisition will enable Altobridge to broaden its Intellectual Property portfolio and grow its Fully Managed Service business as we work hand in hand with MNOs striving to connect their subscriber groups at lower costs."

ADC will focus on providing in-building and outdoor wireless solutions to meet the coverage and capacity challenges of 3G and 4G networks.

Both companies are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for existing customers. Contracts and warranties with existing and pending customers will continue to be supported by Altobridge.
