Telrad brings triple-play to Tbilisi

, launching 28 IP-based sites within less than a year. Rebecca Rachmany, Director of Marketing, Telrad Networks reviews her company's progress.

By late 2005 NewNet was providing traditional voice service to 160,000 subscribers using legacy TDM equipment. The company was looking to upgrade and differentiate itself, changing its corporate image from a traditional telephone company to a modern triple-play communications provider. For this purpose, the company wanted to quickly implement a triple-play solution including voice, data, IPTV and video-on-demand nationwide.

The challenge?

The challenge was to smoothly upgrade to services on an NGN infrastructure while preserving the investment in existing equipment. Furthermore, the project called for a demanding deadline, with the goal of launching IPTV by the summer of 2006.

From a technical standpoint, there were a few challenges as well. The first was migrating from TDM voice services (circuit-switched) to full triple-play service over IP-MPLS. Secondly, Telrad had to expand the network's coverage from two cities in Georgia to a nationwide coverage, while also upgrading services from simple voice features to sophisticated content-based packages.

And the solution...

Telrad provided a customised solution using best-of-breed components to suit the needs of the demanding environment, and in line with NewNet's vision of becoming the leading operator in the country.

The solution, as shown below, used layered solution architecture, starting from the core IP-MPLS backbone, the access edge layer and the core services on top, in order to provide voice, data and IPTV and VoD services. The best-of-breed solution included Telrad's VoIP trunking gateways for a migration path to an NGN network.

Implementation included deployment of the telephony core, the IPTV head-end, the ISP data centre, the core network, the aggregation network and the access equipment to enable access to the triple play services via the networks. The basic configuration of the new network is shown in the diagram below.

Fast deployment

Within less than a year, Telrad completed the launch of 28 sites based on IP networks according to customer specifications. NewNet was able to begin initial implementation of triple-play among commercial customers in September 2006. By January 2007, NewNet achieved full deployment of what it believes to be the most advanced network in Georgia, offering the full range of triple-play services, including IPTV, video-on-demand, voice and video phone, and internet services.

For NewNet, the benefits of NGN migration included triple-play offering for increased subscriber usage, increased revenues and customer perception as market leader. Telrad in turn has also launched successful system integration projects worldwide, with flagship projects in Honduras, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, and Myanmar.
