The UK Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance (OCSIA), the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) have joined the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) to organise the 2nd Annual Cybersecurity Forum 2011. Aimed at strengthening the capacity of key decision makers in policy, regulation and operations in ICTs, the event will examine the various facets of Cybersecurity such as critical information infrastructure protection, protecting government networks, security in mobile channels and promoting international cooperation in cybersecurity through eight highly interactive sessions.
Commenting on the event, scheduled to be held on the 14th and 15th of June 2011 at the BIS Conference Center in London, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, the Chief Executive Officer of the CTO, said, “There is global agreement on the need for broader stakeholder engagement to establish resilient Cybersecurity measures that straddles borders without which the potentials of ICTs for socio-economic development cannot be fully utilised. As the premier ICT agency of the Commonwealth, the CTO is delighted to partner with the OCSIA and RUSI to build upon several recent initiatives such as the Global Cybersecurity Agenda of the ITU. In view of our common heritage, common legal and administrative systems and adherence to a set of core values, the Commonwealth presents one of the strongest platforms for promoting international cooperation in Cybersecurity. In fact, Commonwealth cooperation on Cybersecurity would be a beacon for other stakeholders and could act as a model for eventual adoption by the Global ICT community.”
Stressing on the importance of Cybersecurity, Mr. John Bassett OBE, RUSI Associate Fellow for Cyber-Security said, "Cybersecurity is one of the most important security challenges of the coming decade. The CTO Cybersecurity Forum 2011 offers an outstanding opportunity to find out more about the challenges that lie ahead and discuss the issues with leading experts in the field.”
Speaking ahead of the event the Director of the UK Office of Cyber Security & Information Assurance, Mr. Neil Thompson, said that “the Forum will bring together Commonwealth countries in order that they can develop a common understanding of some of the key aspects of cyber security. The economic and social opportunities offered by the internet are enormous but we need to develop international consensus on norms of behaviour which allow us all to prosper safely and securely in cyberspace.”
The Cybersecurity Forum 2010 organised by the CTO and OCSIA in June 2010 drew over a hundred high level delegates from across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean to learn from and share experiences with key experts from Europe, UK and Global ICT entities. This year’s speaker faculty consists of representatives of International Telecommunications Union, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the European Commission and the Commonwealth Secretariat together with key industry players such as Research-in-Motion and EMC.
Among the key speakers expected to share cutting-edge knowledge on various aspects of Cybersecurity are Mr. Stephen Cutts, Assistant Secretary General, Commonwealth Secretariat; Rt. Hon. Alun Michael, Member of Parliament, UK; Mr. Martin Euchner, ITU; Mr Nader Henein, RIM, Mr John Carr, UK Children's Charities' Coalition on Internet Safety and Mr Neil Thompson, Director, UK Office of Cyber Security & Information Assurance.Sign up for Developing Telecoms FREE monthly e-newsletter and keep up-to-date with all the latest news, analysis and postings on the site.
