Prepaid electronic top-up now available for Mexican Movilway customers

One of Latin America’s leading electronic top-up service platforms, Movilway, is now expanding into Mexico to offer electronic top-up for prepaid users.

Users can top-up their mobile phones as well as others, regardless of distance and borders, in a safe and accessible way. Accounts with the main operators in the country can be topped up through a mobile phone, point of sale device (POS) or through Movilway’s online top-up interface.

Movilway has been operational since the beginning of 2010 in Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Panama and Ecuador. The firm is aiming to establish over 8,000 points of sale across Mexico by the end of this year, and by 2012 users will be able to top up in over 30,000 locations.

Providers of the top-up service will benefit from a new business model, setting themselves apart from their competition and increasing their income significantly. Customers will be able to access the full range of Movilway’s electronic wallet services, including cash withdrawals, retail payments, utility bill payments, deposits and transfers, among others.

The project is facilitated by a robust open platform which allows for easy integration, and has been tested across several continents.

According to recent data from analyst Wireless Intelligence, about 90% of mobile phone users in Mexico have prepaid plans, and that number is constantly growing. With more than 73% of mobile customers worldwide using prepaid services, Movilway is looking to capitalise on this potential and actively expand its top-up solutions and electronic wallet to other countries in the region, including Chile and Argentina.

“The launch of Movilway’s top-up in Mexico is the first implementation in the country of the necessary technology to provide mobile financial services to the “unbanked” population that does have a mobile phone” says Dan Cohen, President of Movilway. “The electronic wallet by Movilway will allow, for example, for a top-up Movilway client, from Querétaro in Chiapas or San Cristobal in Puebla, to pay their taxes or water and electricity bills, send money to a family member or friend, or even receive social benefits without leaving their job or home, with only a mobile phone.”
