Equipos Telemo starts VSMS for Venezuelan mobile users

Voice Short Message Service (VSMS) allows mobile users to send and receive eight-second voice messages or voice notes from their terminals whether via CDMA, GSM or any other technology by just making a standard voice call. Venezuela’s Equipos Telemo has just become the country’s first company to offer this facility.

Equipos Telemo, a Venezuelan private company with eight years of experience in mobile telecoms, is launching Venezuela’s first Voice Short Messaging Service (VSMS), moving one step forward in  developing and integrating new voice services within a complex telecoms market.

This new platform allows mobile cellular customers to record, send and receive short voice messages or voice notes eight seconds long via a regular phone call. The receiver of the message gets an inbound call on his/her mobile terminal and when answered, the message is played back to them, once heard, the message can be deleted, saved for a limited time or forwarded to another number.

The VSMS service developed by Telemo is compatible with any telephone system (either fixed line or cellular GSM, CDMA, etc) and this makes it very appealing to operators as well as customers that don’t need to subscribe to additional data services or purchase an expensive and sophisticated state-of-the-art mobile terminal to use it.

Telemo Director Andrés Maduro explains that sending a VSM is very simple: the sender makes a phone call to a short * number followed by the destination number and then, the system allows the caller to record an eight-second message. After recording the message, VoDIS (the voice platform developed by Telemo that integrates voice and data) makes a phone call to the destination number and delivers the audio message. The destination user is allowed to respond, replay, forward, delete and save the message for 72 hours (configurable) in the same call.

Andrés Maduro also explains that when the VSMS message cannot be delivered through a call because the destination mobile is out of coverage, is turned off or the user did not answer the call, then VoDIS sends the destination number a SMS message indicating the instructions for how to retrieve the message and how much time it will be available on the system.

Telefónica Movistar in Venezuela is offering this innovative service under the name of Dilo, which has a very attractive and low price of US$0.00005 plus tax per message or US$0.00004 per message when subscribing to a monthly plan of 100 messages for US$0.004 plus taxes. The service was launched with a promotion for Valentines Day that includes one month of the service free for all customers that purchase certain terminals. Movistar will continue to offer the service after the promotion.

The VSMS service is built on top of the VoDIS platform developed by Telemo, the first multimedia system that integrates voice services (WAP, Web, SMS, multimedia and Internet technologies) to develop innovative products that seek to satisfy the demanding needs of current and future mobile customers and operators.

Currently Telemo is offering VSMS and VoDIS platform to several operators and expects to launch the service in the next few months in other Latin-American countries.
