Isolated communities connected with solar solution in Solomon Islands

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

Many remote communities across the Solomon Islands will be connected for the first time with a new solar-powered solution. Operator Our Telekom has selected Altobridge’s low-cost lite-site solution to bring voice, SMS and mobile data connectivity to previously unconnected communities.

Altobridge’s lite-site enables mobile network operators to bring mobile connectivity to remote communities at low cost. The infrastructure can be deployed quickly and easily via the all-in-one altoPod; a single pod can then serve up to 1500 subscribers.

If clusters of pods are deployed, there is essentially no limit to the potential number of subscribers. The solution, which combines GSM/3G and VSAT technologies, also consumes the lowest amount of power of any mobile communications system for remote communities.

Steve Hall, Executive Director of Our Telekom, said “bringing mobile connectivity to hundreds of unconnected communities is core to our corporate mission. We chose this solution because of its operational cost efficiency and its ease of deployment. The solution minimises transmission costs and consumes the lowest amount of power we have seen within the industry, making it ideal for solar power.”
