This year is going to be a year for fibre network boom in Pakistan. To support the construction of a massive fibre-optic infrastructure in Pakistan, Digital Solution, as distributor for Aspen Optics, will introduce the latter's fibre connectivity products, including media converters, fibre switches and next generation optical transceivers.

ImagePakistan has a population of 165 million, an urban ratio of 32.5% and an average household size of 6.8 people. This represents a huge market for FTTX (Fibre To The Home/Premise/Business). Cities like Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore are experiencing strong demand for high speed fibre broadband from the government, financial and other commercial sectors.

Pakistan's huge fibre network infrastructures are expanding in full swing. Mobilink, TWA, Nayatel, Multinet, Wateen Telecom, Brain Tel and PTCL are active in fibre network advancement. Taking these one-by-one:

  • Mobilink has a fibre optic backbone of 8,500 km.

  • TWA, a submarine fibre optic cable operator, specializing in end-to-end international connectivity, has also constructed a backbone fibre network for Mobilink for domestic connectivity.

  • Nayatel introduced Pakistan 's first Fibre To The User (FTTU) network with advanced Next Generation Network (NGN) capability, offering data, voice and multimedia services in Islamabad.

  • Multinet with over 4,500 km of DWDM backbone is connecting fibre network to 107 cities in Pakistan up to 100Mb/s.

  • Wateen laid 5,500 km of backbone network and Metro Rings providing Triple Play (Data, Voice, Video) services in most major cities.

  • Brain Tel offers Quadplay (Data, Voice, Video & Surveillance) in Lahore.

  • PTCL started an exclusive FTTC (Fibre-To-The-Curb) phone connection last year.

Malik Naseer Ahmad, Managing Director of Digital Solution, says: "It is an important transformation; you can see great progress every day. In Pakistan, fibre is replacing copper to achieve high speed for Triple Play or Quadplay. You can imagine how promising fibre broadband is. Our partnership with Aspen Optics is a good news to both our carrier and enterprise customers."

* Digital Solution is a solutions provider based in Lahore, Pakistan. It offers a comprehensive range of IT, telecom and security surveillance solutions aimed at small to medium sized enterprises, right through to larger organisations across a broad range of industry sectors throughout Pakistan.

** Catering to the needs of global telecom carriers, network system integrators and distributors, Aspen Optics product line includes MetroBlazer media converters, concentrators, CPE and distribution switches as well as Geebic branded SFP, GBIC, Xenpak, XFP, 10GE X2 and other next generation optical transceivers. Aspen Optics has valuable experience in offering clients carrier-grade tested products benefiting from its investment in an in-house testing facility in Hong Kong.
