Huawei's aim is more competitive telecommunications equipment and services, notably by supplying and installing telecom equipment and networks.
At the end of 2003 Etisalat launched commercial UMTS services with Huawei's end-to-end solution, and became the first operator to provide 3G services in the Middle East. This April, Etisalat announced it had acquired a 50% stake in the West African mobile operator Atlantique Telecom, which in turn owns majority shareholdings in mobile operators in Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger, Togo and Cote D'Ivoire.
