A television audience of 200 million is enjoying high-quality broadcasts of sport, in particular, the Indian Premier League Twenty 20 (IPL T20) cricket tournament, thanks to high-definition content acquisition, contribution and distribution from Ericsson.

IPL CricketThe IPL T20 competition has entered its third season this year and is expected to draw a TV audience of 200 million in India alone. To enhance the viewing experience of this hugely popular competition – which features some of the world’s best cricketers – the action will be broadcast in HD to homes across the country using Ericsson HD solutions. Essel Shyam, the Indian Telecom/IT & Media Broadcasting Technology service provider, is managing the entire Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) for the event, using the Ericsson EN8040 HD DSNG solution.

The IPL takes place between March 12 and April 25, 2010. With such a showcase event being broadcast in HD, it was essential that the solution deployed by Essel Shyam offered the highest levels of quality and reliability. The EN8040 offers a multi-format encoding platform combined with an advanced satellite modulator. This provides the best picture quality at the lowest bit-rates and transponder bandwidth and with new improved low latency modes.

“The IPL is a huge broadcasting event throughout India, and as the sole provider of DSNG for the tournament it was important that we chose the right solutions to ensure that our coverage is faultless and provides the best picture quality,” said Lalit Jain, Director of Essel Shyam. “We had no hesitation in selecting Ericsson’s EN8040 DSNG product, which enables us to make vital bandwidth savings for HD coverage without compromising on quality.”

“Essel Shyam’s use of our HD DSNG solution is playing a major role in bringing HD coverage of one of India’s most popular sporting events to a huge audience,” said Giles Wilson, Head of Technology, Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “The live HD experience engages viewers deeper with the action and we’re pleased that our technology will bring the highest quality coverage to India’s cricket fans.”
