Analysis,
Convergence: CTIA Wireless 2007 gave Nokia the
chance to explain its future convergence strategy. Centred on the four “Cs” of
Connectivity, Cost-savings, Creativity, and Culture, Nokia seeks to explain how
its business mobility products, solutions, ecosystem and strategy will benefit
millions of mobile professionals at work and in their personal lives.
“Four Cs” reflect Nokia's strategy to connect millions of
mobile workers. For Nokia the concept of “Convergence” is not just about
technologies coming together. It’s about a rapidly-consolidating playing field
where companies “converge” to lead the future of business mobility.
Nokia's claims is that it is poised to lead this
convergence. At CTIA Wireless 2007 it was showing how its business mobility
products, solutions, ecosystem and strategy were set to benefit millions of
mobile professionals in their work and personal lives and also to make it
easier for IT managers to deploy and manage mobility solutions.
In more technical terms the combination of the Nokia
Intellisync mobileware platform and Nokia E-series devices significantly
increases the potential for businesses to achieve new levels of productivity
and competitive advantage. The combination also presents opportunities for
operators, service providers and systems integrators to drive subscriber growth
and technology adoption with the advent of new solutions and capabilities.
“The mobile industry,” says Scott Cooper, Vice-President,
Mobility Solutions, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia, “is clearly at a tipping
point, in more ways than one…We are seeing a more strategic approach to
mobility - a shift from the point solution implementations that we’ve
encountered in the past three years, to a new, more comprehensive approach to
mobility. Enterprise customers will enjoy the benefits of always-on, robust and secure
mobility solutions, beyond mobile email delivered to the executive suite or
travelling sales staff.”
Nokia articulates the advantages of adopting its mobility
solutions in “Four Cs” - Connectivity, Cost-savings, Creativity, Culture.
With Connectivity
Nokia believes it can connect with more devices, on more platforms, using more
operating systems and technologies, than any other mobility or technology
vendor. Its Intellisync Mobile Suite offers the most extensive device support
in the industry, 100+ devices on five platforms: Symbian, WindowsMobile, Palm,
UIQ, J2ME. In comparison, Intellisync mobileware is a platform that extends beyond
email, delivering mobile connectivity to virtually any business application or
data source.
Under the heading Cost-savings,
Nokia claims to be driving efficiency and security for businesses, translating
towards higher returns on investment and improved worker productivity. To
achieve this means offering a common user interface to make training, scaling
and troubleshooting easier, not to mention compatibility with a variety of
back-end solutions like MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise and other POP/IMAP
corporate messaging platforms. Device management, too, drives cost-savings and
simplicity for IT managers, via traceability, security and over-the-air
application installations, while consolidation of wireless, landline and data
in one device simplifies support, drives scalability and realises savings.
When it comes to Creativity,
Nokia simplifies the process of connecting people, empowering them to focus on
collaboration to drive business success. The process incorporates enabling data
retrieval and distribution across any network connection to any device,
allowing third-party developers to customise robust applications unique to
individual companies due to the open standards platform; and enabling rich
end-user features and “beyond email” capabilities offered by application and
file sync.
Culture looks forward to a time when everyone is connected: mobile workers
can manage work/life balance effectively, while companies can foster
environments of innovation, collaboration and productivity.
