WiMAX, India, Asia-Pacific: BSNL, India’s largest telecom service
provider will in the next few weeks deploy what it claims to be India's first certified WiMAX
network.
Key to the contract is Aperto’s PacketMAX, which is
intended to offer high-speed, high-bandwidth services to business customers.
All products and services will be to WiMAX Forum Certified standards. The
deployment of PacketMAX base stations and subscriber units will take place
across six cities and four rural areas in India,
and is a consequence of Aperto’s successful bid for a BSNL tender issued in
late 2004.
The six initial cities are: Kolkata (West Bengal), Bangalore
(Karnataka), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Hyderabad (Andhra
Pradesh), and Pune (Maharastra). The deployment, which will also cover four
rural districts in the State of Haryana, is planned for completion in the next few weeks.
The WiMAX network will enable BSNL to offer enterprise customers
high- bandwidth data communications services such as MPLS, VPN, leased line,
and Internet access, as well as VoIP, telemedicine, e-education, e-governance,
and e-commerce in remote areas. More specifically, BSNL will deploy Aperto's
PacketMAX 5000 base stations, and PM 300 subscriber units, along with
WaveCenter EMS Pro, the element management system.
