4G, Licensing, Malaysia, Asia-Pacific: Malaysia’s government is encouraging the roll-out of 4G/WiMAX in its country
next year by announcing that it will issue two appropriate licences in the next
few months.
Successful bidders will thus be authorised by the Energy, Water and
Communications Ministry to proceed in line with the Governemnt’s aspirations.
The situation was slightly complicated before last July
when a specification not in line with the Malaysian Government’s aims was
cancelled. It had been a tender for 2.3 GHz spectrum and had attracted 17 bids,
including two from key Malaysian players Maxis and DiGi.
Ultimately, the Kuala Lumpur regime
would like to see four licences in operation.
