Contracts, GSM, Colombia, CLA: Colombia Movil, the country’s third largest mobile operator, is to bring enhanced services to over 560,000 users across Colombia's five biggest cities.
Colombia Movil was created by Bogota Telecommunication Enterprise (ETB) and Medellin Public Enterprise (EPM) and currently serves 2.5 million mobile subscribers. Coverage is principally in the cities of Medellin, Cali, Bucaramanga and Barranquilla, as well as Columbia's capital city of Bogota.The expansion will be possible thanks to the company winning Colombia Movil’s latest contract - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. In turn the new GSM core network expansion contract will be Huawei's largest mobile softswitch network in Latin America, and will extend the capacity of Colombia Movil's core network to over one million subscribers. Huawei is known as a key player in mobile softswitch networks worldwide, and is believed to be the first to introduce 3G technology to enhance GSM network performance, providing 3G-like service over a 2G network. Huawei mobile softswitch networks are intended to help operators maximise their value and profit by lowering network construction costs and the network life-cycle operation and maintenance expenditures. To date, Huawei's mobile softswitches serve over 100 million subscribers, and Huawei has deployed more than 500,000 TRX applications with large-scale networking and swapping experiences in complex wireless environments.
