APC site approaches top 15,000 in world - alexa.com PDF Print E-mail

Internet, Global:  Amazon.com’s information service alexa.com has listed APC.org, the site of the Association for Progressive Communications, as just outside the world’s 15,000 most visited sites...

The bilingual English-Spanish site is therefore achieving a visitor rate “simply extraordinary” for an .org site in the opinion of Daniel Pimienta of Funredes.org, an organisation that recently became an APC member. Mr Pimienta calculates that in the field of telecoms the only similar organisation to APC doing better is www.EFF.org (the Electronics Frontier Foundation, aimed at "defending freedom in the digital world"), ranked at 8,500. Even more encouraging for APC.org is the fact that its site wins more hits than the so-called market leaders - www.ITU.intwww.UNDP.orgwww.IDRC.ca and  www.DevelopmentGateway.org.

Daniel Pimienta’s own Funredes.org comes in at around 237,000, which for him is a "very good figure for a non-governmental organisation in that field [above many US-based non-profits with much more financial support and marketing capacity]". APC.org's score indicates that the impact of the website goes way beyond "civil society professionals and that the multilingual (approach of the site) will boost the impact and enhance the figure."

For Frederic Dubois, APC’s information coordinator: “The mix of daily news production, frequently-updated training materials, papers on Internet policy and our many technology projects digging out the questions of gender and the environment, probably help to boost the website to its current level of popularity.”

Besides English and Spanish, APC.org is currently being redesigned into a four-language website, bringing a full-fledged French and a limited Portuguese version into the fold - these are languages widely used in Africa and the Americas.
