Contract, Internet, China, Asia: IPTV will soon be deployed by China Netcom in North-east China using UTStarcom’s RollingStream technology.

The new service extends a commercial trial launched last May with an initial deployment of 100,000 concurrent media streams covering the major metropolitan areas of Harbin in Heilongjiang province. The service has now attracted 53,000 subscribers who receive live broadcast TV with time shifting capabilities, 48-hour TV-on-demand and about 5,600 hours of video-on-demand, among other features.

Deals of this nature are currently very common in China, reflecting the widespread role of television in the country. IPTV is a convenient hook from which to dangle added-value for customers who already have broadband services. China’s market for entertainment is enormous compared with others. A trail in the USA, for example, may involve just a tenth of the numbers participating in China.
