GSM/GPRS, Latin America, Chile:   Telefónica Móviles' recent operations in Chile have now earned it more than 5 million customers.

At the beginning of this year Telefónica Móviles integrated the operations of Telefónica Móvil of Chile and Bellsouth Chile into one company, consolidating its local service with the launch of a new brand for the Hispanic market: Movistar.

What is more, through an agreement with Nokia and using movistar as its trademark, Telefónica Móviles is expanding its voice and data service in Chile by means of its GSM/GPRS mobile telephone network. The expansion will not only increase network coverage but will also improve capacity to transmit mobile data and voice to movistar customers.

Under the contract, Nokia will expand and update movistar's radio network nationwide, including Nokia base stations and base stations controllers, as well as an expansion of the operator's GPRS network. Nokia will also provide services that include planning, set up and network optimisation. Nokia therefore continues as the sole GPRS and GSM radio access network supplier to Telefónica Móviles Chile, having in October 2003 launched Latin America's first commercial EDGE services with the Nokia EDGE solution.

Telefónica Móviles has operations in 15 countries across three continents and a customer base that totalled 86.4 million as at June 30, 2005. Its customer base totals more than 88 million.
