News, Contracts, Mobile, Slovenia, CEE: Slovenian operator Tusmobil has placed a contract with Nokia Siemens to supply 400 base stations and a mobile switching solution to enhance the operator's core network.

Nokia Siemens Networks' (NSN) contract involves supplying 400 base stations to the Slovenian operator Tusmobil. It also means optimising the operator’s core network with a mobile switching solution. NSN will provide implementation services as well as network management tools. With the current upgrade, Tusmobil’s core network will evolve towards a fully convergent core architecture.

NSN makes several claims for this contract. A key issue in addition to the "cost savings and improved capacity and coverage" is the environmentally friendly technology supplied. The NSN Flexi base station to be used in the project gives "power savings at site of over 60% compared to traditional 3G equipment" and allows for a "25% reduction in the number of sites required to provide the improved services."

The Nokia Siemens Networks MSC Server softswitch solution, based on 3GPP Release 4, allows operators to "boost switching capacity with savings of up to 70% in operating expenses" while fully supporting future IP multimedia services. The contract marks an extension of cooperation between Tusmobil and Nokia Siemens Networks dating back too 2006, when Nokia Siemens Networks solution was chosen as Tusmbil's GSM/EDGE core and radio network supplier.
