The run-up to 3G reflected the anxieties of many in the telecoms sector: the nervous shuffling through 2.5G before the plunge was taken, the questioning over suitable applications.
Much less complicated is 4G, the technology of wireless broadband. Several companies have expressed their intention to pioneer 4G. But some analysts are not impressed, believing technologies such as WiMax can deliver the same results for much less cost.
But is WiMax the pathway to 4G or a 3.5G cul-de-sac? Its supporters are optimistic, as a recent international demonstration of interoperability by more than 20 companies showed.
Developing Telecoms is taking a look at progress in these overlapping fields with some pioneering case-studies and profiles of leading companies. And we will be looking at the impact ond value of these technologies to the developing world.
