The run-up to 3G reflected the anxieties of many in the telecoms sector: the nervous shuffling through 2.5G before the plunge was taken, the questioning over suitable applications.

Much less complicated is 4G, the technology of wireless broadband. Several companies have expressed their intention to pioneer 4G. But some analysts are not impressed, believing technologies such as WiMax can deliver the same results for much less cost.

But is WiMax the pathway to 4G or a 3.5G cul-de-sac? Its supporters are optimistic, as a recent international demonstration of interoperability by more than 20 companies showed.
