Agenda > Disaster Management  Natural disasters can happen anywhere. But their impact on emerging and developing economies can be more devastating and long term than elsewhere. Following the Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina it is not surprising that communications companies world-wide have looked again at their strategies for dealing with natural disasters. Communications systems are highly vulnerable in disasters. Yet communications are vital for co-ordinating a response to the disaster. In this section we present a range of news, information, products and strategies for getting communications back in the shortest possible time after a natural disaster and for making systems as disaster proof as is possible.

 Mobile, Disaster Management, East Africa: The 200,000 fisherman that work on Lake Victoria will soon be using mobile phones to call for help if they get into trouble on the world's second largest inland lake. In an initiative coordinated by the GSMA's Development Fund, mobile networks will be expanded to cover Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, fuelling economic and social development of the lakeside communities and potentially reducing the number of fishing-related deaths each year...
