Americatel rolls out Thomson IP telephony/Triple-play services

Thomson Cirpack soft switches have been purchased by Americatel, an affiliate of Chile' s national telecommunications carrier Entel, and service provider in Guatemala , Honduras , Peru and El Salvador .

The contract reflects Thomson's expansion of its telecoms and ISP customer base through the provision of innovative IP devices and solutions, and follows the company's strategic two-year plan.

Americatel operates in seven Latin American countries. To consolidate legacy infrastructure and further expand into the corporate market, Americatel chose Thomson's Cirpack voice-switching platform. Developed by Thomson's Next Generation Networks (NGN) business unit, the Cirpack range of VoIP soft switches is promoted as a solution to the challenges faced by operators in the region as it is claimed to provide a platform to deliver both legacy telecoms services and newer VoIP services as providers build out the broadband networks to support them.

NGN technology is just beginning in the region and the delivery of triple play services is imminent. Key players such as Americatel will use these technologies and integrate these new services into their networks to give them a competitive advantage in this emerging convergent telecom market. Thomson is in turn expanding its presence and NGN experience in the Central and South American regions as these developing markets continue to add millions of subscribers each year.
