Telecom carriers have continually requested a 40G per wavelength DWDM system to carry more traffic, feature higher aggregation, and further reduce network operation, administration and maintenance costs when compared to the 10G per wavelength DWDM system. The recent increase in traffic means that upgrading a 10G per wavelength system to a 40G per wavelength one will be a prerequisite to any new piece of WDM backbone equipment for operators (as of September 2005 Huawei had completed the building of over 300,000 km of DWDM backbones around the world).
